July 2011 Newsletter
News/Events:
Not much to report this month in terms of News/Events due to the Summer season and the re-enactment hiatus we all suffer until we start back in the fall.
Workshop Report:
Work continues on the tent, although not as fast as I’d hoped. The July workshop featured three of us: Alex Kyrychenko, Chris Stewart, and myself, doing the major assembly of the first right door (Right Door #1 below) and starting the assembly of the second left door (Left Door #2). In addition to door assembly, we punched holes in a further 6 each, 20” x 30” sheets so that we’d be able to get the start on the second set of doors as well as cutting out the last 3 additional 20” x 30” sheets – the last we’ll need to complete the tent. I also punched about 20’ of 1” strip so that we would have enough for all the tunnel stitching – I just hope we have enough 1” strip on-hand to complete the tent!
In addition to this effort at the workshop, Jared Fleury was a house guest once again for a movie filming here in our area, and he actually completed Left Door #2 on his own – more laudes for Jared as he continues to put in his own time on the tent!
The doors are tricky – I plan to complete all four of them before making the final cuts to the leather and then stitching them to the roof/walls. Left Door #1 is done. Right Door #1 is complete less the 4” weather strip, and Left Door #2 is complete.
Member News:
And now, for the REALLY BIG NEWS! Our very own Signifer, Alex Kyrychenko, and his lovely wife Liliya were awarded their US Citizenship in a ceremony this month. This is incredible news – I only wish that most Americans who were born with that privilege would live up to its ideals as do the Kyrychenkos. In the words of one of our Founding Fathers, Thomas Paine:
“What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly…it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated.”
Maybe if we ALL had to earn our citizenship, then we’d esteem it as we should and understand that for every “right” that we as a society like to cite, there is a concomitant RESPONSIBILITY!
