The Majesty of God

Sermon Notes

“Yet those who wait for the LORD will gain new strength;  they will mount up with wings like eagles they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.”  (Isaiah 40:31)

The consequences of sin had left the people of Israel weakened and discouraged.  The prophet Isaiah announced the good news of God’s grace, forgiveness and infinite power to restore and renew His people.  This chapter in Isaiah is one of my favorites, and confronts us with the awesome majesty of God, displayed especially in the wonder of His works, wisdom, and worth.  “Lift up your eyes on high and see who has created these stars, the One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power not one of them is missing.”  (Isaiah 40:26) Therefore, we cannot say that God doesn’t see us, care for us, or have the power to meet our essential needs.  God has a good, ultimate plan for you and your life.  He promises us that He will give us the spiritual strength we need for each moment of life – whether we are flying like eagles, running, or merely walking.  In each state or season, when we are waiting upon Him, in spite of the difficulty, we are moving in the right direction and gaining new spiritual strength along the way.

“They go from strength to strength”  (Psalm 84:7)

“But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines brighter and brighter until the full day.”  (Proverbs 4:18)

“Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, our inner man is being renewed day by day.”  (2 Cor. 4:16)

Isaiah 40:12-31                            The Majesty of God

The prophet Isaiah comforts God’s people by confronting them with the infinite glory of God.  Their sins had been atoned (v.1-2) and good news was on the horizon (v.9-10).  They now could rest securely in the knowledge that God is majestic over all creation and life.  God’s majestic character is the source of our comfort and strength.  Three aspects of His majesty:

1.    The majesty of His works (immeasurable) (v.12)
a.    Notice:  No person can measure the waters, the heavens, or the dust of the earth.
b.    Consider:  What about God’s creation causes you great wonder?
c.    Related Scripture:  Psalm 93:1; 118:24; 145:5

2.    The majesty of His wisdom (unsearchable)  (v.13-14)
a.    Notice:  God cannot be counseled or taught.  He is the source of all wisdom.
b.    Consider:  What are some of the questions you have about God’s wisdom?
c.    Related Scripture:  Psalm 32:8-9;  Prov. 4:5-7;  Romans 11:33-36

3.    The majesty of His worth (incomparable)  (v.15-17)
a.    Notice:  The nations are like a drop from a bucket compared to God’s glory.
b.    Consider:  2 Peter 1:16;  Hebrews 1:3; 8:1
c.    Related Scripture:  Genesis 1:16; Colossians 2:5

Three questions which confront us:
-    Who then is like Him?  (v.18,25)
-    Don’t you know?  (v.21,28)
-    Why do you say?  (v.27)

The demanded response:  Wait upon the Lord- and you will gain new strength.  (v.31)
